The FAA and the pilots' union need to address fatigue much better. In the post above, Sam writes about lapsing into a momentary state of "trance" on his last flight of the day during takeoff roll! That is not reassuring or comforting! It makes me want to schedule all of my flights early in the day and to avoid the last flight of the day.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10991135.post-90508545293975629242010-06-27T13:41:27.142-05:002010-06-27T13:41:27.142-05:00another sensational post, Sam. this post is for a...another sensational post, Sam. this post is for all those that think flying airplanes is nothing but glamour. over the series of 5 legs countless decisions were made that, like you said, impacted hundreds of people.

curious to know what the general response is from ORD ground controllers when queried for progressive taxis? or does that simply not happen?

thanks for writing.GreenPilothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15015075715007844611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10991135.post-8277076365444605422010-06-22T21:28:07.586-05:002010-06-22T21:28:07.586-05:00I love your blog! My dad is a 747 captain for United doing mostly Southeast Asia and Australia flying. He will get MAXIMUM five take offs and landings in a month (if he's lucky). In the 1990's ground was frequently hear to give clearances "via the scenic".

Sam, I have been enjoying the motorcycle saga, but I'm really glad you were able to get back to a masterfully written flying tale for a change.

As I think I have mentioned here before, I think the lack of duty hour regulation on the part of the FAA is criminal. It is not up to the airlines to tell the FAA about safety, it's the job of the FAA to protect the lives of all concerned with intelligent regulations.

I('m sure you realize that we're you a motor coach driver or a cargo truck driver your airline would never be able to schedule your trips in this way.

While certainly acknowledging the skill of professional motor vehicle operators, does the FAA truly think that airline pilots (who have a requirement for just a 'wee little bit" of skill, judgment and alertness can safely operate many, many hours long on a daily basis?

As a basic point of reference, no longer than 14 hours on duty in any 24 our period, no longer than 11 hours at the controls, not more than 60 hours "on duty" in any 7 day period, or else 34 hours free of duty to "reset" his/her clock.

Now if we can make a huge, paying industry out of road transportation and regulate driver fatigue this closely, how can our country justify subjecting the public (and the crews themselves) to such a much less regulated environment?

Maybe someone out there working on that PPL or CPL as the first step to an ATP should consider a CDL instead ... rookie truck drivers often earn substantially more than rookie pilots, and they for sure work less hours and expose themselves and the traveling public to less fatigue-induced danger.Dave Starrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05853160665847969116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10991135.post-11703652540595241872010-06-18T17:55:06.763-05:002010-06-18T17:55:06.763-05:00Great post Sam! The monsoons were about and the sky was flashing. It was a smooth flight until he dropped some flap and we bucked like a PO'ed bull. Smell of ozone was in the air as we deplaned.

I have sympathy for your brother being stuck in HNL. I didn't have that problem with seniority as my stepdad's seniority date was 361101.
