Where is Sam Now?

I get into Portland at 7am today, I'm off until Saturday afternoon, and Dawn is at a math conference in Victoria all week. I'm therefore doing a little traveling via jumpseat on my days off. Can you guess where? I'll bring my camera and laptop and I think I'll have internet access, so I'll post periodic clues. Try to guess the country, state, and town - bonus points if you know the name of the building I'm staying in. First prize is dinner at Rock Bottom Brewery next time you're in Portland.

First Clue:

Second Clue:

Third Clue:

Bonus Hint: I won't be staying in the same place that I flew into. I have about an hour's train ride.

Fourth Hint:

Fifth Hint:

a math conference?!? While I have no idea what one does at such an event, I am strangely impressed...

Ok, I'll start the guessing. Philadelphia. haha.

Somewhere in Europe - Same adapter is in my kit...

Yup I am going with Europe. I'll extend a guess that you are in Amsterdam, Holland (The Netherlands for you newbies).

I say this because it seems like you have jumpseated there alot in the past.

Nice puzzle.

We're looking for a building of enough interest to be known internationally, yet that a regional FO can afford to stay in.

We're looking for a country that uses a plug like that and is possibly divided into states, although 'state' may be a generic term for political division in Sam's vocabulary.

And we're going to be in a city more or less directly served from the US.

But I can't think of anything that suits the clues, so I'll wait for the next one.

It's obviously Europe, the question is where. Since your last mentioned destination is PDX, I'd guess that you jumpseated on Lufthansa and went to Frankfurt (on Mein). Will need more clues for the building though.

That's a continental European mains plug. I'm guessing Germany given you said "state", for no particularly good reason other than the fact that it's a hub city I'll go with Munich in Bavaria. (Wondered about Frankfurt, too, but it's already been guessed.) Not enough information to guess the building though.

The extra ground connector at the side of the plug (apart from the regular grounding pin) does seem German to me.

So this would lead to
Germany, Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel (Google "flight portland germany") and "Am Segelhafen Hotel" (http://www.tourisline.de)

I´m going with Munich......Octoberfest.....now, where in Munich are you????

Could be several places in Europe. We use that extra grund connector outside Germany also.

For now I'd like to guess on somewhere in close to the Alpes again.

I am going to go with Amsterdam, too, to be unoriginal--this given your potential jumpseat opportunities.

You're at home, opening wedding gifts from your old college buddies (fearing a pimp job) and writing thank you notes while enjoying a good bottle of wine from Oregon on your "long weekend".

Oh, I forgot....you're young :)

Uhhhhh on the way to LONDON, England

I'm guessing scotland. On the aerobridge, you'll notice the RBS ad. (royal bank of scotland).

based on the 2 euro coin you are in Belgium. and Im guessing in Brussels (international airport).

Anonymous said...

wild guess: sheraton brussels airport?

Anonymous said...

let me refrase this.. lol. Belgium, you prob flew to brussels international and if u took an hour train ride, you just MIGHT be in Brugge, West Flanders! the medieval city.. i feel like internet sherlock holmes!

Sam,

This is hysterical to read :)

I didn't realize you'd be buying the winner dinner...I hope I get dinner when you return... :)

Have a WONDERFUL time, I'm really going to miss you.

Hm, looking at the airport picture is from FRA - it's served by both NW and AA (see the top of the van at the bottom), it's not in UK, since you can see a car driving on the right, it's not Amsterdam, since I've been there and it looks different :) - so I'll go with FRA again. (I checked BRU, but it does not seem to have NW flights, or at least they are not in their timetable). But a train from FRA to BRU takes 3 hours, not one. So either Sam is somewhere closer in Belguim, or the Euro coin is only important as being a Euro, not a Belgian euro. :) But as Aviatrix says - Google is your friend. So after searching for train frankfurt one hour on google, I'd go with Heidelberg!

There's definately some overthinking on the Euro Coin. A coin minted in Belgium will make its way all over the EU...

Babe, of COURSE you get dinner with me...and one cool smart reader of my blog! Hehe...

Have a great time at the math conference. And oh, for Neil, it's a math *teachers* conference. Not the math version of trekkies or anything :-).

OK...I change my inital guess.
The picture of the field is actually a vineyard. I am narrowing it down to France or Germany. From the "DJH" sign, I think it may be somewhere in the Rhine River Wine Region, because DJH is a German Youth Hostel organization. I spent alot of time at Ramstein and Frankfurt in the AF, and I am betting your final destination may be something I have pictures of myself;)
I'll keep working on it.

The only troubling part is that the picture of the gate the plane is at does not look familiar to a Frankfurt Terminal that I can remember, though I was usually looking at it from the military side of the ramp.

Loadmaster, it's FRA.

Oh No! I am definitely wrong! Using the mighty powers of Google Earth, I even have a picture of the gate Sam arrived at in Frankfurt. Google Earth Users -- Zoom in on the furthest East Gate and you will see it.

OK...Now for the DJH near the Rhine with the best view! I know, if it were me looking for the coolest town on the Rhine, I would be just north of Mainz!
Bacharach maybe?

That's so funny you found the same photo! hehe.

God I love a good challenge!

Aviatrix said...

I laughed when I saw the DJH because my German's just good enough to know what that would stand for in a triangle. I was apparently right on when I said to focus on some place a regional FO could afford to stay.

I like the idea of a math convention a la trekkie convention. Everyone could dres up like their favourite numbers or equations.

LoadMasterC141 said...

Oh For the Bonus Points, if it is Bacharach, the Hostel would be in the 12th Centry Stahleck Castle.
(That I got from the DJH website)

Anonymous said...

Heh, I wonder if you found it in the same place as me? :)

Sam Weigel said...

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! I thought I was going to have to post another clue or two! I AM staying at Burg Stahleck in Bacharach, Rheinland-Phalz, Germany. Loadmaster forgot to mention the state/länder, but he obviously knows Bacharach, as do many air force guys.

Good work all! Loadmaster, let me know when it'd be convenient to collect on that dinner :-).

LoadMasterC141 said...

Yay! Like I said, I love a good challenge. That was reward enough. Thanks so much for creating the fun Sam!

Unfortunately, I am in Texas, travel alot, but never to Portland:( Someday I'll make it up there and maybe I could buy you a beer.

Sam Weigel said...

I have to say I was very impressed with the Google Earth angle to deduce it was FRA. I was originally assuming one of my readers would've once arrived into Terminal 2 at FRA and recognize it. But this was much better sleuthing!

My next two clues were going to be a picture of the "Bingen-Rüdescheimer Fahrgastschifffarht" ferry I took from Bacharach to St Goar, and then a picture of Burg Stahleck itself. I'm glad you guys figured it out on more abstract clues, though! Helps to have Air Force readers, tho - many of them know that corner of Germany well. :)
